COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) -- Arthur C. Clarke, a visionary science fiction writer who won worldwide acclaim with more than 100 books on space, science and the future, died Wednesday in his adopted home of Sri Lanka, an aide said. He was 90.

Clarke, who had battled debilitating post-polio syndrome since the 1960s and sometimes used a wheelchair, died at 1:30 a.m. after suffering breathing problems, aide Rohan De Silva said.

Clarke moved to Sri Lanka in 1956, lured by his interest in marine diving which he said was as close as he could get to the weightless feeling of space.

"I'm perfectly operational underwater," he once said.

He wrote "2001: A Space Odyssey," which director Stanley Kubrick turned into a classic movie.

Clarke was regarded as far more than a science fiction writer.

He was credited with the concept of communications satellites in 1945, decades before they became a reality. Geosynchronous orbits, which keep satellites in a fixed position relative to the ground, are called Clarke orbits.

He joined American broadcaster Walter Cronkite as commentator on the U.S. Apollo moonshots in the late 1960s.

I was saddened when I heard he had passed on the day of his death.
He was one of the the best three sci fi authors of all time and my personal favorite, well at least until I finished all of his stuff available to me at the time I was in high school and then moved on to Robert Heinlein.

My first Clarke novel was of course.... 2001 - A Space Odyssey which I of course read ebcause the Kubric film came out and I had heard that it was best to read the book first. I remember the librarian helping me to find the book, and saying "Clarke with an E" as she knowingly handed it to me. I think she knew I would likely become a whore for reading his works having had that taste of it as she handed me the book from the stacks with a smile I will never forget.

So having found this thread late I will post a pic here amoungst the text which I garnered from a Gay Poser Art Yahoo list, not sure who did it, I thoght it was Ulf but its not signed so I am unsure... anyway to whomever made this I am in debt and will share it here.

I think this will work but incase its some dynamic link crap its in the photo's section with the upload same date as this post.

    Peace
